Learning About Coastal Erosion
Public Information Session
A public information session about coastal erosion was held recently in Geraldton. The session was organised by the Sunset Beach Community Group and the Drummonds Cove Progress Association.
Experts presenting information and responding to questions from the floor included :
Ben Bassett – Senior Planning Officer, WA Dept of Planning
Doug Vickery – Manager of Infrastructure Services, City of Cockburn
Peter Mackay – Climate Adaptation Coordinator, Northern Agricultural Catchments Council
The session was a first for the local community, providing the opportunity for those attending to learn from experts about the current state of knowledge on coastal erosion, mainly around Western Australia. Information provided included :
Methods being used to research, understand and address the risks
Current legislation that guides planning applications for development on our coastlines
Case studies of areas where erosion risks have been assessed already such as Broome and Cockburn
The session was held on the evening of 23rd October, at John Batten Hall in Drummonds Cove, and ran from 6:00 – 9:30 pm. It was well attended and the light supper and refreshments were greatly appreciated by all. The format of the evening involved guest speaker’s presentation for the first 2 hours, followed by questions from to the floor to the expert panel.
The evening was generally considered a great success. We hope to participate in delivering similar information sessions on this important subject in the future. Our sincere appreciation goes to the Drummonds Cove Progress Association for the excellent venue at John Batten Hall, and for the way they facilitated the evening. Also we would like to thank the expert presenters who made themselves available for the evening. Finally, our thanks to Phil Wise who is the coastal management coordinator for the Sunset Beach Community Group.
